Craters of the Moon, Idaho

Arrival Saturday, June 6

68 Miles | 2 hours

We arrive at Craters of the Moon around 5pm, which is first come first served, no hookups, and charges $15 per night. It's about 2/3 full so we find a nice spot to park Gypsy. It's getting cold and the heater works briefly then conked out on a 40-degree night at 6000’ elevation.

It's aptly named as we feel like we are on the moon!

Datta goes on a solo ride around the park, climbing the big black cone. It’s so windy that his bike almost gets blown off the mountain. There are no bikes allowed anywhere off the road but he eventually finds a back trail by Ice Cream cone and get some downhill runs in.

We all cuddle up that night and it's cold but bearable with hot tea from the gas cooktop, which still works fine!

The next morning, we pack up and warm up in the Audi to drive around the park to find some more trails and meet some Michiganders with a family member from South Dakota and get some great tips on going to Custer: Joey’s at Holton, Black Hills, Wind Cave if open, Little devils tower is a 4 mi hike where they saw mountain goats.
