Epilogue - December 2020

Having returned to our regular lives, albeit still with somewhat modified school and work habits since arriving back from our cross-country adventure in August, we have slowly gotten used to living around the pandemic.

Sibri has settled into an incredible off-campus learning pod with several of her closest friends in a Capitola Rec program called Out of School Time, and life has become a little more predictable where our daily routines include social distancing and zoom meetings, in a world where where hugs and handshakes have become private currency, where rolling blackouts, empty shelves, and the advent of toilet paper as a sought-after commodity has become the new reality.

Over the course of the year, Mari has become a deeper subject matter expert at Apple on diversity and inclusion, helping to facilitate the creation of worldwide employee networks for the Black, Latinx, Women, and LBGTQIA+ communities.

Datta came home to a real estate industry which has seen sweeping changes, marked by new property showing protocols with gloves, booties, hand sanitizer, face masks and the now-ubiquitous PEAD form. Open houses have become a thing of the past and virtual showings on occasion replacing live viewings during lockdown periods. Incredibly, the real estate markets stayed remarkably strong in both the residential and commercial sectors, with the exception of restaurants and retail which are still waiting to recover. And with the help of an amazing support team, Main Street Realtors and Firmus Financial have been able to maintain a high level of performance and service for our clients and members.

As if the pandemic wasn’t tough enough, thousands of lives were also disrupted by the widespread California fires as well as a bitter and divisive election on top of already unthinkable economic and health hardships.

And yet in the midst of all this we witnessed the bonds of friends and family becoming stronger, underscoring the significance of the human connections we share with those around us.

With the recent Covid surge, the latest wave of lockdown rules are mandating a return to no showings for most of the Bay Area, but fortunately the Santa Cruz County Health Department and Board of Supervisors, working in collaboration with the local Association of Realtors, has agreed to allow property showings to continue in Santa Cruz County at least through January under the strict protocols that are being adhered to.

Heading into the holidays it is our sincere hope that we can use whatever opportunities we have to help keep everyone’s livelihoods viable and take stock in the things that are truly important for our collective happiness as we prepare for whatever the new normal is as we move into life after 2020.
