Arrival Tuesday, June 16
52 Miles | 2 Hours plus stops for work
We travel through the north parts of Yellowstone and start to see snow on the peaks. We also encounter our first bear at close range: a black bear just uphill from us as we slow down behind the truck in front of us that has stopped to look at him.
We pull into Eagle Creek campground and run back into the few Airstreamers from the store. We drycamp paying $7 for the night and at sunset go for a soak at nearby Yellowstone Hot Springs which has a giant pool and about 85 degrees plus hot and community pools at 60 and 105.
Taking a cue from a kid who we see towing both his parents as they float on their backs in a slow and blissful procession, Sibri pulls us around by the ankles as we take turns enjoying the float in 86 degree waters. Plunging into the cold before settling down in the hot 105 pool gives a nice tingle and we chat with a local who tells us the source spring is also used by a neighbor to produce geothermal power for his ranch.
After encountering some feral elk in the streets we arrive back at the dark, starry skied campground to a note on our door stating we have overtaken a spot in a double campsite.
We spend our first night without heat, all piled into the same bed dressed in warm clothes along with Bella the cat, and stay surprisingly cozy.
We head out first thing in the morning before our accidental host wakes up, leaving him a little thank you note along with a permission slip to collect on the double fee we paid for half the space.
