Hays, Kansas

Arrival Friday, July 24

470 Miles | 7 Hours

Datta has been doing all of the driving, so with a huge backlog of work Mari takes on the driving for this leg which ends up being the longest stretch of the trip, punctuated by several more dead armadillos.

There's no welcome to Kansas billboard but the terrain has definitely flattened out and highway signs now have the state’s signature sunflower on them accompanied by caution signs at regular intervals to share the road with bicycles and Amish buggies, of which we see several along the way.

Pulling off the road at a vacant utility yard for lunch and workout, we do our midday Zoom workout with Sunita in 90+ degree heat while Sibri hangs out with Bella the cat in the Airstream with the fans on.

We scarf down the leftover Indian food sitting while sitting our exercise mats before hurriedly packing up, not realizing for until our next workout day the following Monday that we left behind our mat, most weights, and the TRX strap in a rush to get back on the road. Argh!

We search for a cheap place to stay the night. Not finding any harvest hosts in Kansas, Mari books us the last available spot at a place called the Creekside RV resort in a half-way town called Hays. We arrive well after nightfall to a gravel pullthrough site and stay on the bumper for the night.

In the morning we find the Creekside RV Resort to be quiet but basically a non-descript field pretty much in the middle of nowhere with a series of gravel spaces, all occupied, giving the effect of a highway rest stop set circling a main laundry and restroom building

We opt to pull out without ever finding whatever drainage ditch they had named the Riverside RV park after, opting to get an early seat at the local IHOP where we trade music recommendations with our masked server who is a blues singer, when she’s not waiting tables.
