Arrival Thursday, June 4
200 Miles | 4 Hours plus 3 hours work on the side of the highway
Mari is worried we won’t get coverage on the back roads so we stop for 3 hours to work in Wells, Idaho. A nice couple pulls over to check out the Airstream, asking us for advice. In Twin Falls we picked up a trickle charger, plastic snake and roller catches at Home Depot. Since the Airstream was too big to pull through the drive through and most restaurants are closed, Datta walks the Taco Bell drive through and a nice family offers to up the order and gives us our change back.
On the way out of town, we cross the Snake River Canyon where two bungee jumpers with helmet mount go pros are preparing to launch. We drive through lava fields to the distant backdrop of the Sawtooth mountains, passing the ice caves and the great cavern and make a note to check them out on the way back through.
Another nice couple pulls over to check out the Airstream in Hailey while we shop for groceries. They have a 2017 Bambi, but have always loved classic airstreams and might be interested in our other Airstream, a 1966 named Babs.
We pull in at 8:30pm to Ketchum, what is essentially a giant blacktop parking lot with hookups and some RVs clustered at the end, but mostly vacant. Our closest neighbor is a year-round trailer park but the wifi is good and we are surrounded by the Sawtooth National Forest.
Datta figures out how to stage the chairs as the trailer is more fun to look at than the park and Sibri serves us pomegranate juice dressed up as wine for a lovely lovely 9pm dinner of gourmet burgers.
The next day we work thru lunch, taking a brief workout break with Sunita, hanging the TRX off the only tree we can find in the RV park. By late afternoon we drag Sibri kicking and screaming out of the comfort of her warm bed and way too much screen time and manage to get her on her bike trailer.
We take the scenic bike path along the Wood River up into Sun Valley. It’s freshly paved with bike tunnels, bridge crossings and rest stops along the way, and Sibri perks right up into adventure mode. Datta and Sibri climb some rocks and do a fun river hike while waiting for Mari to wrap up her work catch up. Mari loses it when cycles up to see Datta and Sibri balancing on a log in the middle of the river. A cyclist even stops to remark to Mari, "I hope they're good swimmers!" We see a vintage Bambi airstream parked along the way and arrive into downtown Ketchum.
There we stop at an open air dirt lot eatery when we spot a food truck serveing empanadas. They’re sold out, but instead they make us possibly the best quesadillas ever served from a food truck. Across from them we order a Huck (an adult huckleberry slushee) from a bar built out of a converted shipping container that shares the space.
We cycle on and stop again shortly to get ice cream then pedal out to the Sun Valley lodge. Sibri has a swan encounter and learns how ice is made for their giant ice rink. We race a thunderstorm back to the trailer and win, falling asleep to the sound of rain, while streaming "Back to the Future" via Netflix.
