Arrival Thursday, June 25
192 Miles | 3.5 hours plus 3 hour layover for work
Mari has important Webexes back-to-back so we find a dead end road in a nice spot with 4 bars of LTE service overlooking a nearby pond and set up shop in our newly established front and back offices, with Apple taking the car and Main Street taking the trailer.
While conducting business in the trailer Datta feels a tick crawling up the back of his neck and sees several more crawling along the couch and walls, and we figure out they’ve been nesting in the big comforter that we had hung out to dry back in Bismarck. We give it a good shakeout and brush off before heading back on the road, heading north to connect with highway 2, which we’ve been told has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. It does.
Mari’s research shows multiple picturesque campgrounds but unfortunately they’re all by reservation and they’re all full. We take a gamble and pull in around 10pm to test our luck and see if there are any no-shows out of the 22 sites at Pokegama. We are surprised to find 3 are available, including what looks like the best site in the park, overlooking the dock. After emptying out at the dump station we decide to take number 5 and take our chances that nobody shows up late on a Thursday night.
After a nervous hour of peering out the windows we settle in for the night taking turns showering at the the Park's surprisingly modern bath facilities. We put out the area rug but stay on the bumper in case we get a knock on the door. We wake up in the morning relieved and refreshed, opening the door to one of the prettiest campsites we’ve stayed at, with lush lawns leading down to the waterfront.
The park is basically a giant fishing camp situated around the head of the Mississippi River with mostly locals packing boats and fishing poles. Mari takes calls from around the world and we take a morning stroll across the dam and get some nice pictures before heading back on the road after yet another great breakfast by Mari of potatoes and omelette all made while prepping for her next Webex, with none of our neighbors any the wiser that we just pulled our first-ever late night “gypsydocking” stay.
