We have kept hearing about Tahquamenon falls and we’re still over 7 hours from Jackson so we decide we have to make one more stop on our way home. The tough part is we’re both slammed at work and our research indicates there is no service at any of the scenic campgrounds in the area of the falls, but Mari comes up with the solution: we book a site at Brimley State park campground which is about 25 minutes past the turnoff to Tahquamenon.
Pulling in we discover a somewhat crowded but very pleasant family campground of lush lawns amidst the trees right on the shore of Lake Superior, and we can tell it’s going to be a great final stop away on our trip. Since we pull in at 3pm we are going to get to enjoy a full afternoon of sunny daylight with good coverage and our own private beach access through the small strip of forest that borders our campsite on the lake.
Excited at getting to spend the rest of the afternoon in such a great spot Datta does a full setup of the trailer while Mari works away and Sibri plays with Bella. Datta and Sibri spend most of the day lounging by the lake which is a short 30 step walk from the back of our site to the beach, whilst knocking down emails and doing our video conference meetings.
It’s 80 degrees out, with perfect humidity and no bugs. We decide to enjoy the rest of the day at our campsite instead of rushing off to the the falls, and Sibri meets a great group of new friends including twin girls Aurora and Aspen, their brother Aiken and their friend Madison. The kids hit it off famously, building a kitty sand fort on the beach. Bella is a little overwhelmed with all the attention and runs away twice, only to be tracked down and treated to another raft float on the lake before the kids take off for a bike ride across the park.
By the end of the work day, Datta and Sibri float Mari around on a $6 raft in the waist deep waters which Mari says is very relaxing as long as you don’t let the still chilly Lake Superior water touch her.
Unfortunately when we get back to the trailer we discover the screen in Datta’s new MacBook has cracked from being hastily packed away on the floor, but fortunately we are near the end of our trip so we figure we can get it repaired during our stay in Jackson. The next morning we do an early day trip to Tahquamenon which is just under a 2 hour round trip, and with our work schedules and calls coming up, we decide to just hit the upper falls and save the boat excursion on the lower falls for our next visit.
Sibri is excited to see her friends again and gets another solid 4-hour play date in the beach while we finish our work appointments and manage to wait until 3pm to break camp and start heading home for the final stretch to Jackson, which the map tells us is about 5 hours away. We would have stayed an extra day, but Mari’s brother Patrick is flying out the next morning and wants to make us dinner before he heads back to Florida.
